Sunset Center

Modern performance systems thoughtfully integrated into a historic 1931 auditorium.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Restoring a Historic Carmel Performing Arts Landmark

The Sunset Center, a historic 1931 auditorium in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, underwent a complete renovation that modernized the auditorium and added a new stagehouse. Kyle served as lead theater consultant on the project.

In coordination with the structural engineer, Kyle developed an innovative arched stage-lighting catwalk that complements the auditorium’s Gothic architecture, as well as a custom forestage reflector over the apron to improve room acoustics. The renovation also included new rigging and drapery systems, performance lighting, seats and interior finishes, and a motorized orchestra pit.
