About Kyle Smith, ASTC
Theater Design Consultant
Established in Asheville, NC in 2001, Kyle Smith & Associates, Inc. provides theater, AV/Sound, and acoustical consulting services. As a theater consultant, Kyle has served as a principal/project manager on several hundred new construction and renovation projects including high schools, colleges, churches, community and professional theater companies, corporate theaters and amphitheaters. His involvement has spanned all phases of development, from strategic planning and building programming through construction administration.
Kyle Smith has 27 years of theater consulting experience, including 12 years as a principal and past president of Theatre Consultants Collaborative. He spent five years as a designer at Auerbach, Pollock, Friedlander in San Francisco, preceded by several years as a theater consultant with Lawrence Graham, ASTC in Atlanta.
Kyle worked as an engineer with Tru-Roll/Grosh Scenic Studios, a Los Angeles-based stage rigging contractor and manufacturer, designing custom rigging, drapery and stage equipment for performing arts centers. He served as a production stage manager and technician at Theater Artaud, a venue for experimental theater and modern dance in San Francisco, and the renowned San Francisco Mime Troupe. In addition to theater design consulting, he also brings 35 years of experience as a performing musician to his theater consulting practice.
